A Perth-based motor trimming company has started an unique range of protective machine covers to the Queensland mining business which are conserving a number of the state's biggest organizations lots of money in replacement parts and preventative maintenance costs.
Modern motor trimmers has spent over 5 years investigating and developing a range of ram covers for trucks and excavators. The 'ripstop' PVC sleeves eliminate wear and tear, perhaps even tripling the life expectancy of ram seals and chroming, and producing important expense savings.
The covers, which sell for under $1,000, have also been developed for coal shoots, rock crushers as well as dust extractors, and are proving popular having procurement professionals and mine planners who have quickly picked up on the savings and efficiencies they offer.
Garry Spouge, the MMT managing director said the covers give resistance against rocks, dirt and salt pitting the machinery's rods, which can cause to the tearing of ram seals. They have been developed to enable easy self-installation by mechanics.
"Fitting new ram seals can take few mechanics around half a day, and have obvious safety outcomes, primarily where cranes or cherry pickers are needed," he said.
"It's obviously a costly exercise when it comes to manpower as well as with machinery currently being down or out of use for several hours.
"That is the reason why we've designed our ram covers to be easily installed, they slip on and are secured either side by a patented clamp; the complete process normally takes about 45 minutes and can increase the life of the rod and seals by two to three times.
"Since an excavator ram may cost in excess of $50,000, the cost savings are pretty terrific, which is the reason why the demand for our covers is rapidly expanding."
One of the first industries to fit the protective covers to its entire truck fleet was Western-Australia based FMG, at its mine in far north WA.
WA anf Rio Tinto in Queensland has simply placed a bulk order for the sleeves, which MMT is manufacturing in a range of security colors, which includes yellow and orange.
"We're finding that the more progressive companies are seeing the huge price advantages, and our orders have additional by 20 per cent since first launching into the Queensland industry only 6 months ago," Mr Spouge added.
"We're also working with a number of the larger miners to custom layout preventative sleeves for other plant and machinery, and this bespoke, tailor-made service is an area which we will be looking to grow into in the near future."
The research and development work undertaken by MMT on the protective ram covers is an addition to the company's center business, which is focused on the supply, setting up and servicing of premium suspension seats and seating products to the Australian mining, construction, engineering, building and transport sectors.
The industry is Western Australia's only official supplier and repairer for German manufacturer ISRI, which is greatly popular as the manufacturer of the world's most advanced driver and passenger seating products.
