Pallet racks enable the arranged storage of goods and merchandise in a warehouse operation. The racks provide for horizontal storage of pallets on multiple levels. Every different pallet space can be assigned an unique location and this data is input into a computer database together with the identity of the unit being stored at the specific location. This information permits the company's employees to know what products are being stored, what quantity of a specific product is in storage as well as the place that the product is kept.
The pallet rack system includes several categories. The most popular is called the selective pallet racking system. There are actually three major design types ie the roll formed, the structural bolt and the very narrow aisle. The roll formed is also referred to as the teardrop rack for the reason that holes on the column are the same shape as teardrops. This allows easy adjustment on the horizontal load beams which are held in place with mounting clips. Many of the components of the selective pallet racking system may include load beams, upright frames, braces, pallet supports, wire decking, footplates, column protectors and guard rails.
Within the pallet rack system are different forms of pallet storage rack designs. The four most widespread include the drive-in and drive-though racks, the push-back pallet racks, the pallet flow racks and the compact mobilized pallet rack.
The drive-in and drive-through relate to the ease of access for a forklift. The drive-in features one entry way which also functions as the exit in the aisle between rack rows. The drive-through has an entry at one end of the aisle and an exit at the opposite end of the aisle.
The push-back pallet rack makes it possible for space to get utilized by depth instead of width. Multiple pallets are generally stored right behind each other. A pallet can be stored on top of a wheeled cart that fits on rails and moves back as another pallet enters. The pallets are placed on these nested carts that are set upon inclining rails. Each pallet should move back when a new pallet is put on the front. When the pallet is taken off, the remaining pallets will roll forward.
The pallet flow is designed with rollers on the bottom of a sloped storage rack. The addition of a pallet to the rack results in the other pallets to move away from the incoming pallet. Removing a pallet causes the other pallets to move forward towards the removed pallet.
The compact mobilized pallet racks are able to move along a floor track so that aisle space can be used as storage. This method eliminates the necessity for a forklift aisle in between each rack. The racks can be moved as needed and open up a forklift aisle. Storage space can be increased significantly with this system.
